I love to swoon around in the words of this recent genre of Poets; Nayyirah Waheed, April Green, Cleo Wade and Atticus.
Their words are like little offerings, little Altars to our spirits. I find poetry soooooooo nourishing and calming. How about you?
Lately, I'm loving the poem above by Nayyirah Waheed and I'm going to dive into the words and extract some Yoga for you (and me) from them.
tonight. under the moon. choose you.
Such a beautiful invitation.
tonight. This first word feels to me a little like the first word in the Yoga Sutras, Atha. A sweet calling or invitation to your heart and soul, to commit to a time but not any time ...... tonight.
under the moon. Oh the magical night time feel and sight of the moon. Under to me also feels like the exhale, a kind of surrender to the busy "to do", "to be" or lately "be more". Tucking that to the side and stepping out, under the mystery and beauty of the moon with feeling of the exhale. Open, listening, surrendered bathing in the beauty of the moon.
choose you. Yes! Choose you. Make that choice to have your own back, to spend some time thinking and feeling what it might look like to simply make that decision. What does that look like in your life? It feels to me like a little reminder of our dharma. To choose the blueprint of your soul, to follow that map. The Bhagavad Gita indicates that following our dharma is where our happiness lies! Even if we fail, even if we have to try and try again, that our real happiness lies in following our own path wholeheartedly.
This sweet poem, this little cup of words feel like a prayer for me. A calling, and a reminder to step out and take a few minutes to soak it up, be with the moon, the nighttime smells and make a little intention to choose me, my highest, my best.

Follow your heart. Listen to your heart. Have some heart. Let your heart lead you.
There's a lot written, said and sung about our dear hearts.
A few years ago I did a workshop and a student asked me the following question after class (which I think is universal one), how do I listen to my heart? How do I follow my heart?
The past year I really delved into this. Some instances were intentional and some accidental. But through these experiences, through the Yoga of Svadhyaya (self study/reflection), working with Heart Codes (learned from Kelly Sunrose) through these, I began to really "know" this feeling. The feeling of my heart happy, of being true to my heart. And in Yoga we call this experience, this knowing; The Vijnanamaya Kosha. And its all yours!
The fun bit here is that, no one can do it for you!
You must do this yourself.
You must "know thyself" (a Greek Aphorism).
It is not a path for the faint hearted, but there is also no other path if you want to be happy!
Here are some ideas to think about and work with:
Asana: We do the physical practice of Yoga so we can unwind and unfurl the tense and tight parts of our body.
Pranayama: We sit and work intentionally with our breath, after all a calm and steady breath lead to a calm and steady mind. If the mind is racing around like a chicken, how can we possibly hear our heart?
Meditation: The balm of sitting quietly, here is the junction of the others meeting up. When we sit quietly, when we make time to be with ourselves and really listen, then, we might begin to hear the whispers of our heart.
Lately I've been really drawn toward True Heart Offerings. Aside from my love of J Crew, I've been definitely buying from smaller companies, which I feel have true heart offerings. Recently I've been loving the following:

So maybe start by noticing what you feel lifts your heart? It might be an inspiring word, it could be a book, maybe a cafe, perhaps a pair of shoes! Start there, notice your happy heart and its feels and it will lead you to your true heart.
Yoga asana is a great practice to start to empty yourself.
We can begin to empty our minds of the swirl of thoughts as we sync with our breath, we can release and let go in our bodies from stress and tension as we move into postures and from them into the next, during all of this we might perhaps glimpse some spaciousness.
Sometimes this comes in the form of the pause between each breath (one of my favs!), we can also tune into the sense of vastness as we close our eyes and rest in savasana.
One of my favourite poses to "empty" is Balasana, Childs pose. No the irony isn't lost on me here, as this is the physical posture that children can sleep in sometimes. I love the way that my whole body begins to soften, first with my forehead resting on the ground which makes me feel into that notion of surrender, letting go. Its so opening for the space between my shoulder blades, as I breathe and let the expansion happen with each breath softening and relaxing more letting the blades drift toward the floor. Shins resting on the floor and body totally heavy, quite the tonic for a busy day (don't you think!).
Then the flow opens, ideas come, and that feeling of potential begins to show itself.
So I invite you to ask yourself, where can you find space, or a place to let yourself relax and trust? Then the next step is to ask yourself, now your feeling relaxed and open, what am I filling up my cup with this month/season/year? What am I choosing to do? Where am I going? Who am I showing up with? How am I showing up? Does this feel part of the true flow of my life? Like its almost "of course". It makes total sense to you. And that's the best part of being an adult, its only you that it needs to make sense to, or even if it doesn't "make sense" in our thoughts, maybe it "feels true".
