Lately, more students are asking for a little something for home. We've had fun doing this after class a few weeks back, and just last night I thought "hey, your students might like this Sara".
This little evening practice is a balm for me after a busy day socialising. I'm not sure I'm an "introvert" but I certainly need to balance the outgoing energy with energy from being quiet and doing things like... well, yes Yoga!
So I've called this The Residual. It's a few ideas for digesting the residual energy from being busy, or having a full day. I was talking with a family member and they were saying that they can't go straight to sleep after a big day out... that there's all sorts of thoughts, energy and that it can take time to calm down. This energy is kinda the 'residual', its the buzz after!
So here's a little Yin practice that I hope might help you in this busy, fun and full season.
First is Legs Up The Wall.... just do that. Smooch up to the wall with your choice of hip, then carefully swing your legs up and lie your torso down. If that's pulling on your legs, move your hips a little away from the wall. If you need support for your head, put a pillow or blanket underneath it. 2 mins here (or more!)
Second: Hero Pose. Nice to rest here. Find a nice tall spine, and cuddle up to your breath. Notice it. That's all. Nice pose for digestion too; food, emotions, energy. If you need to, prop a blanked between your bottom and heels. 2 mins here (or more haha)
Third: Prayer Pose or Wide Legged Balasana (Childs pose). I really like this one after a day's standing or sitting. It lets me lengthen out my shoulders & spine. I also like the word prayer, and resting my forehead toward the earth lets me feel like I can surrender a little and just trust. 3 mins (or you know...)
Last but not least: Savasana. Lie down, get comfy. Tuck your shoulders under and your chin in. Be here for 5 minutes if you can.
I hope you enjoy this little sequence. Its not really focused on a "meridian" per se, but on working with the days posture and activity. I did it in today's clothes as I want you to know that some days you don't even need to get changed! You can do yoga in whatever, J Crew, Bonds, Lulu... doesn't matter, it just matters that you do it.
